Useful Horse jargon & terms explained

I thought it’d be useful to put together a video glossary of terms that I use. Some of the terms I know not everyone will be familiar with so I wanted to take a moment & go through them for you.

Where do these terms come from? These terms come from my favourite  Natural + Dressage + Western + Cow work exercises that I do with my horses Ozzie & Matilda. I do both groundwork & riding exercises. And I think these exercises are really important to develop a happy & healthy ‘all rounder’ type riding horse.

These exercises that I do with my horses are suitable for:

  • Trail riders
  • Dressage riders
  • People who do not do dressage
  • Western riders
  • Vaquero horsemanship
  • Natural horsemanship students
  • Anyone who wishes to build better connection & partnership with their horse
  • All riding horses over 4 years of age

List of terms explained in this video:

  • Personal space
  • Groundwork exercises
  • In hand exercises
  • Polework
  • Polework challenges
  • Cavaletti
  • Liberty work
  • Bitless bridle
  • Hackamore
  • Confidence
  • Herd bound
  • Barn sour
  • Riding one handed
  • Lateral movements
  • Shoulder in
  • Shoulder out
  • Collection
  • Self Carriage

If you are interested in learning more, all of the terms & exercises that I mention are available in our online training courses at www.greyponyfilms.com

This brief, concise explanation of terms was very helpful for increasing my understanding of what is being referred to in the training videos. Thank you for taking the time to put this together for the newer horse owners and riders who have not had a lot of exposure but want to learn to do the best for our horses.

Nice commentary. If there was a video with pictures, I did not get it.
    Very thorough.

Very good information. I rescued a horse almost 3 years ago. 1st year was trying to build trust with him. I grew up with horses ,I just wish I would have known what I am learning now. I need to build his confidence, also mine. I was getting to ride him the one day and he would not stand still . He started bucking and I as thrown off, ended up with a compressed facture of my lower back. That fall I got sick, and was unable to ride. I had a trainer work with him in the spring and in April I got very sick and was not able to ride. My daughter took him to her farm to care for him till I got better. I loved this horse, so I told my daughter I would like her to keep him because I was unsure if I would ride again. Started gaining my strength back the following spring and my daughter decided he just was not the horse for her. So I decided to give him another try, Right before the pandemic hit I got him back, I worked with him and a trainer, we really seemed to bond. I see him everyday and try to do ground work with him, I feel we are back to where I was a year ago. Do not know what to do, if he is in the pasture i can’t get him unless most of the horses are out of the pasture, then he will come to me and one other lady. If I don’t put him in his stall he stays out because no one can get him. Any suggestions? I am 66 and I really want to be someone he can trust.
