The 100 Miles a Month Challenge for Horses

The 100 miles a month challenge is a series of groundwork exercises & lessons for horses over three years of age. Do you really need to walk 100 miles in a month? How will this challenge help my horse?
- What if my horse spooks or gets anxious during this challenge?
- What if my horse keeps trying to eat grass when we are doing the 100 miles challenge?
- What if my horse goes too fast or too slow when we are walking together?
First, let’s look at what horses the 100 miles a month challenge works for. There are 6 main types:
The Slow Horse: The slow horse sets out at snail’s pace. Even if you increase your energy then you’re dragging him and he still doesn’t speed up.
The Fast Horse: Then there is the fast horse, who takes big steps. How can you teach them to mirror your speed & slow down?
The Herd Bound Horse: Many horses find confidence when they are with their herd mates. When you take them away on their own… it all goes pear-shaped! You can see increased energy, anxiety & drama.
The Hungry Horse: What do you do if you are leading your horse with lead rope & they put their head down to try to eat grass every few steps? This is a huge issue for many horse owners.
The Spooky Horse: Got a horse who spooks dramatically when a bird flies out of a tree? This is a fast way to lose confidence & end up in a dangerous situation.
The Pushy Horse: Do you struggle with a horse who walks into your personal space uninvited? This is really not safe as one day they could knock you over.
I started doing the 100 miles a month challenge last year with my horse Matilda.
The 100 miles a month challenge hugely helped my horse! I noticed she was less herd bound, more confident & actually loved going for our walks each day! The secret of the 100 miles a month challenge which was designed by Steve Halfpenny, is that it actually includes a series of 12 groundwork lessons, specifically designed to build confidence at home & on trails.
So all those common issues you see when walking with your horse – like eating grass, spooking, going too fast or too slow, not wanting to leave their friends… well you have step by step exercises to follow to help fix them!

And you also get 3 months of coaching support, which is super valuable, as you can post videos & get daily coaching on how to work through any issues you have during this challenge.
